my gf and i were together for about three and half years and we recently had a breakup for 2months but reconciled. And now talking about marriage. During breakup she talked to a few other guys but denies any sex with them. She recently got checked and dr. told her that she has hpv. I recently got tested by a new hpv test for men by mdlabs and am negative. So I am wondering if she contracted this during our split. And why would it show up now and not before. From what I read I know that hpv can stay dormant in the body but wouldn't it have shown up on her past pap smears? Did she lie to me? Really confused right now.

There really is no way to tell. HPV is by far the most contagious STD. You can simply touch your genitals of an infected person and then touch the genitals of someone who doesn't have it and pass it on. It would seem more likely that she might have contracted it during your break but you will never know.

I have been reading about HPV for a few weeks now as I was just dianosed with abnormal cells and everything I have read said there is no approved test for men only women. My husband and I have been together for 8 years and I was showing unexplained symptoms for the 5 years and we were together for 3 years before that, we will never know who passed it to who, and from what I have read 80% of women carry one strain or another (I guess men too)

Not necassarily so. I have been celibate for the past 9 years and I was recently diagnosed with HPV. It can be dormant for decades.

Pap smears don't test for the virus, so she may have had it for years. Or your HPV test may have been a false negative (after all, they don't test every bit of skin that could be infected). Or you may have been infected, transmitted it, but then eliminated the virus yourself. There's really no way of telling.
