In a surprisingly frank interview with the Guardian newspaper, actor Michael Douglas says that the throat cancer he was diagnosed with three years ago was caused by oral sex.

When asked by the Guardian if he regretted the years of smoking and drinking thought to be associated with his illness, the actor replied, "No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus."

HPV may cause oral cancer, that's true. However, heavy smoking has much to do with it too. Experts say that throat cancer derived from HPV is not actually common and tends to happen on those cases where somebody's inmune system is down and depressed.

I admire Michael Douglas for coming out about this, there are so many celebrities who've had it and don't speak out. If more people spoke about it people would be more aware of it and there wouldn't be such a social stigma.

People need to get clued up and realise how common HPV is. People who get genital warts and HPV complications are just normal people and many have practised safe sex but it's just their bodies don't manage to clear the virus like most.

I strongly beleive there will be a cure for this one day

Oral cancer can be caused by lots of other things, HPV is just one of them.
